This week, Fischer High School senior, Rachel H. offers a d’var torah on parashat lech lecha.
In parsha Lech Lecha, G-d commanded Abraham (who during this time was called Abram), “Go from your land, from your birthplace and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you” with only the promise of Abraham’s descendants would become a great nation. Abram packed up his household and travelled to the land of Canaan (Israel).
However, before settling down, there was a famine in the land of Canaan. As a result, Abram and his wife Sarah journeyed to the land of Egypt before returning to Israel once the famine ended. While in Egypt, Abraham married a woman named Hagar where they had a child named Ishmael.
Just as in the parsha, as seniors many of us will journey from our home and travel into the unknown world. Whether leaving the state or the county, we will no longer be surrounded by the known. Our school, family, and friends have provided us the foundation but it’s our decision. While we might not get into the college of our dreams, there is a purpose to everything. Even if we do not know it yet.
