Proving the Formula for Pi the Old Fashioned Way

In recognition of Pi Day, Posnack Lower School students spent time proving the formula of Pi by seeing how many times a circles circumference would go into its diameter. The students discovered that despite the circle’s circumference, its diameter was always approximately 3 times smaller. Second, Third, and Fourth Grade students measured the circumference of a circle and predicted how many times the diameters could fit into the circumference; following in the footsteps of the ancient Greek mathematicians as they devised the formula for Pi.
