The Meaning of Amalek

In Parashat Ki Teitze, we are introduced to the mitzvah (legal obligation) to destroy the memory of Amalek. Who was Amalek? Why is the mitzvah about the destruction of the memory and not the Amalekites? A brief recap is necessary to fully understand what the mitzvah is about.

Amalek was a tribe often depicted as the epitome of antagonism against the Israelites. Emerging from the biblical narrative, the Amalekites are first mentioned in the Book of Exodus (17:8-16), where they launch a surprise attack, the first terrorist attack in recorded history on the Israelites shortly after their departure from Egypt. This unprovoked aggression is met with divine displeasure, and the Israelites, led by Joshua, ultimately defeat the Amalekites in battle, a victory also attributed to the intercession of Moses’ raised hands representing faith in God. The Amalekites’ persistent hostility is further highlighted in the Torah, where they are described as a people who preyed on the weak and vulnerable, embodying a form of moral corruption and the basis of terrorism. The Amalekites’ legacy, marked by their inhumane opposition to Israel, transforms them into a symbol of existential threat and moral depravity towards all of humanity. It’s an ideology that has no regard for humans, irrelevant of who they are. In present-day terms, this ideology is played out by various terrorist groups: Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, Islamic Brotherhood, the Islamic Republic of Iran, etc. They all desire to murder, rape, pillage anyone who does not agree and conform to their radical evil ideology, the ideology of Amalek.

The Amalekites’ role in the Torah is not merely historical but serves as a powerful message, emphasizing the necessity of vigilance against those who seek to sow discord, undermine righteousness as well as live by an inhumane ideology. Within this context, it makes total sense the instruction given to us by God in the Torah; that we must destroy the memory, meaning, the ideology of Amalek throughout history. We hope and pray we will continue to fight and irradicate this pure evil wherever it exists and be able to bring forth peace and prosperity to all mankind.
