East Campus STEM Update for January

Kindergarten

In STEM, as the second semester begins, we continue to work on lego building skills.  From lego houses and bridges to workable mailboxes, students are using simple blocks to create masterpieces. Back in the Science lab, we are focusing on how to grow plants.  In celebration of Tu Bishevat, we planted a wide range of vegetables.  We are learning what seeds need to grow and thrive into vegetable producing plants. Kindergarten also got their first taste of 3d printing.  Students drew a design of a ring and our 3d printers were able to replicate their designs.

1st Grade

In STEM, Our first grade students are working with stories, characters, scenes, and plots. After reading a short story, students recreate a scene from the book using legos. Their lego models focus around building techniques they learned in the first semester. They are “building” on what they have previously learned. Back in the Science lab, we are focusing on how to grow plants. In celebration of T’Bshevat, we planted a wide range of vegetables. We are learning what seeds need to grow and thrive into vegetable producing plants. First Grade also got their first taste of 3d printing. Students drew a design of a ring and our 3d printers were able to replicate their designs. From rings with hearts to rings with initials- our whole third grade has new jewelry to sport!

2nd Grade

In STEM, for the second semester, students will be focusing on Earth Science. From building volcanoes, digging for fossils, and creating lego models of the Earth-students will understand how unique and wonderful Mother Earth really is!
Second Grade also got their first taste of 3d printing. Students drew a design of a ring and our 3d printers were able to replicate their designs. From rings with hearts to rings with initials- our whole second grade has new jewelry to sport!
In celebration of Tu Bishevat, 2nd grade planted culinary herbs and hay grass seeds. Once harvested, your students will be able to take home basil, cilantro, and parsley-fresh from our Greenhouse to your kitchen! Hay grass is a special type of grass we can feed to our bunnies Brownie and Coconut and also our hamsters Pinky and Inky! And don’t forget-if you are interested in pet sitting one of our adorable animals for the weekend, email Ms. Hahn, jhahn@posnackschool.org

3rd Grade

In STEM, third grade is starting the second semester focusing on machines-from simple to complex.  Students are using their critical thinking skills to put lego pieces together that move, crank, and turn.  With Legos students have created birds with wings that flap, alligators with teeth that chomp, and lions with movable legs.

Third grade also got their first taste of 3d printing.  Students drew a design of a ring and our 3d printers were able to replicate their designs.  From rings with hearts to rings with initials- our whole third grade has new jewelry to sport!

In celebration of Tu Bishevat, 3rd grade planted tomato and cucumber seeds.  Once harvested, your students will be able to take home fresh tomatoes and cucumbers-from our Greenhouse to your kitchen table!

4th Grade

Meet Popcorn, Hype, Walley, and Micheal-our fourth grade space mission robots!  Fourth grade has been tasked to complete various space operations with their robots.  With movable wheels, arms, and sensors, these robots have already completed some challenging undertakings.  Just check out the videos below highlighting just a few things these robots can do.

In celebration of Tu Bishevat, 4th grade planted tomato and cucumber seeds.  These seeds won’t be growing in our Greenhouse though-they will be grown using our new indoor hydroponic growing system!  Students will learn first hand how to operate these machines.  From checking water conditions, pH, nutrient and light levels-our students will be experts in this new and exciting “growing” field of hydroponics.

5th Grade

In STEM, as the second semester begins, fifth grade continues to study human body systems.  Students have been learning about the various cells found with in our body and the organelles found within these cells. Fifth grade applied their knowledge of cells to create cell models with 3d pens.  With 3d pens, students have been able to display in great detail, the various components found within cells. Our fifth grade has not only been working with our 3d pens but also 3d printing software. Students have started to create, design, and print 3d models of cells with our state of the art, NEW Qidi Tech 3d printers.

In celebration of Tu Bishevat, 5th grade planted lettuce seeds.
