This week we begin reading ספר שמות, popularly known as the Book of Exodus, but referred to by the Sages as “ספר הגאולה” or the “Book of Redemption.” This book marks a transition from the Torah’s focus in Bereshit on God’s relationship with the patriarchs and matriarchs to a focus on God’s ongoing relationship with their descendants, the people of Israel.
