The Midrash tells us that in order to explain the mitzvah of the Shekalim, Hashem took out a “coin of fire” from under the Kisei Hakavod (Holy Throne) and showed it to Moshe Rabeinu. On this Midrash, Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, ZT”L* asks two questions: First, has Moshe Rabeinu never seen a coin before? Second, what was Hashem doing with coins under the Kisei Hakovod?
Rav Eliyashiv answers, quoting a Tosfot from the Talmud in Mesechet Chulin that says Moshe Rabeinu could not understand how a coin, one of, if not the most earthly creations, can be Kofer Nefesh (atonement), and save someone’s soul. So Hashem showed Moshe Rabeinu how the coin has the ability to save someone.
The coin itself has the ability to do good and/or evil. The fire that encased the coin also has the ability to do good or evil. Fire can destroy all earthly possessions, homes, fields, and even families. Fire can also be good, for it helps provide heat when it’s cold, light when it’s dark, and offers a way to cook food and aid in nourishment and sustenance. Likewise, money can be good and evil. Money can cause jealousy, cheating, stealing, and even murder. Money can be used for good, too. It can be used for tzedaka and other mitzvot.
Hashem pulled out a coin that was given with Mesirat Nefesh (self-sacrifice), a coin given L’Shem Shamayim (for the sake of Heaven). This was what Hashem held onto under the Kisei Hakavod. This is the coin with which Hashem told Moshe Rabeinu, Kazeh Yitnu, “like this you should give.” If your money is used in the proper way, it has the ability to be Kofer Nefesh.
Have a wonderful Shabbat!
